Cohousing: The Future of Community and Human Connection | Trish Becker-Hafnor | TEDxCherryCreekWomen
14:55
Trish is the owner of StorySpring Consulting and Director of Community Engagement at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work. A social worker to the core, she advances social change by connecting leaders to resources, opportunities and each other. She is a passionate advocate for housing solutions that address both affordability and the global loneliness epidemic. At the University of Denver, she leads community engagement initiatives and creates gatherings that advance social justice. As a consultant with StorySpring, she provides strategy, facilitation and coaching to nonprofits, social changemakers, and intentional communities. Fueled by her own suburban loneliness and a desire for community, Trish became a founder of Denver’s newest cohousing community. She believes that we are most alive when we are connected, and that intergenerational communal living offers an alternative to our increasingly isolated world. Drawing upon years of experience living communally throughout the world, she urges us to find one another and build our own micro-villages. Trish supports people and organizations advancing social change by connecting them to resources, opportunities and each other. At the University of Denver, she leads community engagement initiatives and creates gatherings that explore a variety of social justice topics. She listens to community organizations and co-creates mutually-beneficial partnerships that push forward social change. As a consultant and owner of StorySpring, she provides strategy, facilitation and coaching to nonprofits and social changemakers, specifically around their communications and public image efforts. She is a founding member of Denver’s newest cohousing community, Aria Cohousing, and a passionate advocate for housing solutions that address both the crisis of affordability and the global loneliness epidemic. She is in the process of establishing a micro-village in Wheat Ridge that addresses both. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
Yet Cohousing success is not magic.  Like a good cake, cohousing has great ingredients, and the ingredients are the people and their committment to the community.  You cannot simply buy a home in our village. You must show that you are one of those special people. There is a reason that most cohousing communities have waitlists.  To find out how you become a member in our community, check out our path to membership below.

Your three-month mark is a time for us all to reflect. Hopefully, you will have spent time shaping our village together and will begin to feel whether you want the mutual care and connection that community brings. Your dreams for a beautiful life in our cohousing village will begin to take form. Because cohousing in Greece is so attractive, you likely have fallen in love with this project, and you may have moved beyond dreams to thinking about the obstacles and challenges at this point. The Greeks say “siga siga” (slowly slowly). Greeks also say “oli mazi”- all together. Know that it takes a village to support each other in transitioning to a better life-- together. As an Explorer member, you have access to our special network of professionals who can help, and our members will also help each other. Special immigration benefits, special tax benefits, how to learn the language, when to sell your home, these are all considerations we all work through together if you choose to renew your membership. At three months, you can renew your membership for an additional €75 a month as you continue your journey. In this way, you will have the support of our professional networks and fellow members in beginning the process of more serious consideration and transition to this beautiful lifestyle and country. If you’ve not already visited, we’ll ask about your plans to visit the locations and consider which project location is calling your name. Having a specific date in mind for a trip will be important to show us you are serious about considering this life. We will also make sure you are starting your empowered learning in sociocratic decision-making method and that you have what you need to be fully involved in your circle. We ask that you make the visit to the locations within the next few months of this extension if you have not done so already. Choosing group trip dates will set you up to experience the group and the locations together at the same time and in person. If you land and find that this is a spectacular and special as we find it, then you'll be ready to become a full member. The experience of becoming a “Community Partner and Pillar” will be marked with a special opportunity, as you will then be eligible for your PRIORITY NUMBER. The date of receipt of your nonrefundable €2000Equity Dues provides you a number in line for choose your unit. The earlier you commit, the more options you will have about your unit choice. You will: *Meet with Evi (Pare) to go over everything *Sign a Membership Agreement to be part of our US LLC and Greek IKE. *Sign a Contract for your Unit. *At this point, all further payments you make can be reimbursed should you change your mind. *Emergencies happen, and people change their minds. You can change your mind for any reason and receive reimbursement. However, you must wait for your reimbursement until the homes are built and someone has bought your home. * You can become a Regular Community Pillar and Partner or a “Values-Led Partner.” If you decide on the Values-led option, you become an angel investor – an impact investor. You are contributing to a brighter future for a Greek family or a legal Refugee family in Greece so that they can live in our community, and you are contributing to the to live in our community. By committing to Impact investing, and by providing 5K-10K (or more!) to aid our Greek wage-earning Greek families and Legal refugee families in Greece, you are making a huge difference in someone’s life and contributing to our village diversity and culture. Some members will choose a smaller unit and then provide the difference to pay down the cost of a home for a Greek family or legal refugee family in Greece. If you do not renew your membership after 3 months, we say a fond farewell, and you can stay on our mailing list. However, in fairness to our members, we do not accept new membership applications from people who have been members in the past unless there is a very serious emergency. Both projects have a solid foundation and progress at this stage, and we are seeking people who value becoming an intentional community of people. Those more focused on having the buildings done first will miss the all-important community-building stage of becoming a tribe together over this shared, beautiful project. There are books written about the incredible journey of other bonded communities- check out the US Cohousing Association website library for some great TED Talks and books and stories about the remarkable journey other groups have taken and what it meant to all of them! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it takes people who see the transition as a journey they will take step by step together rather than try first to have it completed before they join. If you are motivated to live a better life in Greece and in closer connection with neighbors who value living more sustainably and with greater community reliance- let us know! Read the information on Full membership below.
